40K, 226Ra AND 228Ra SERIES IN BOVINE AND POULTRY FEED AND IN DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE (DCP) SAMPLES BY GAMMA-RAY SPECTROMETRY BABT
Luz Filho,Isaias Venancio da; Scheibel,Viviane; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto.
The aim of this study is to determine the amounts of radionuclides' activity present in samples of feed for young and adult chicken and feed for dairy and beef cattle, as well as in dicalcium phosphate (DCP) (CaHPO4), used as a nutritional supplement for animal feed. Radioactivity in these samples is due to the presence of the 238U and 232Th radioactive series, as well as their daughter. In addition, as it is for environmental samples, the activity of 40K should be an important source of radioactivity in all analyzed samples. Gamma rays were measured using a standard spectroscopy system, with a high-resolution HPGe detector. Measured activities in feed samples ranged from 0.23 to 1.51 Bq.kg-1, 0.67 to 4.21 Bq.kg-1, 0.29 to 1.63 Bq.kg-1 and 236 to 402...

Brazil nuts: determination of natural elements and aflatoxin Acta Amazonica
Martins,Maristela; Pacheco,Ariane Mendonça; Lucas,Ana Cyra Santos; Andrello,Avacir Casanova; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto; Xavier,Jose Junior Mendonça.
A study was carried out to evaluate the association of levels of radioactivity, selenium and aflatoxin in shelled Brazil nuts, which were classified in different sizes, for export. The selenium determinations were performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (LOQ = 3.0 µg g-1), and aflatoxins were detected by Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LOQ = 0.85 µg kg-1), recovery rates were between 92 and 100%. Radioactivity was measured by high-resolution gamma spectrometry. The selenium mean concentration was (22.7 ± 7.4) µg g-1. (n = 30). Mean activities determined for the following radium isotopes were: 15.77 Bq kg-1 for 224Ra, 104.8 Bq kg-1 for 226Ra and 99.48 Bq kg-1 for 228Ra. For 226Ra, the levels did not vary significantly...

Elementary chemical analysis in leaves infected by fumagina by X-Ray fluorescence technique BABT
Blonski,Maria Sélia; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto; Parreira,Paulo Sérgio; Aragão,Pedro Henrique Arruda; Nascimento Filho,Virgilio Franco.
Energy Dispersion X-Ray Fluorescence Technique (EDXRF) was employed to study the effects of the fumagina disease on the elementary chemical composition of the leaves. The experimental set up consisted of a Mo X-ray tube (Ksubµ = 17.44 keV) with Zr filter and a Si (Li) detector. The measurements were performed with the infected and healthy leaves of citric plants. The elements Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn were quantified, with an average DL of 69, 12, 8, 4 and 4 µg.g-1 respectively. The obtained concentration for Fe varied from 44 to 192 µg.g-1 in healthy leaves and from 363 to 704 µg.g-1 in infected leaves with fumagina .

Gamma ray transmission for hydraulic conductivity measurement of undisturbed soil columns BABT
Moreira,Anderson Camargo; Portezan Filho,Otávio; Cavalcante,Fábio Henrique Moraes; Coimbra,Melayne Martins; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto.
This work had the objective to determine the Hydraulic Conductivity K(theta) function for different depth levels z, of columns of undisturbed soil, using the gamma ray transmission technique applied to the Sisson method. The results indicated a growing behavior for K(theta) and a homogeneous soil density, both in relation to the increase of the depth. The methodology of gamma ray transmission showed satisfactory results on the determination of the hydraulic conductivity in columns of undisturbed soil, besides being very reliable and a nondestructive method.

Measurements of the fallout flux of beryllium-7 and its variability in the soil BABT
Andrello,Avacir Casanova; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto.
The aim of this study was to examine the beryllium-7 behavior in the soil. Natural variability of beryllium-7 concentration was calculated to be about 23% (relative standard deviation), and the depth distribution could be approximated by an exponential decay in bare soil, with an average penetration depth in the soil about 1 cm. The nuclide was not found below 2 cm depth, which confirmed its utilization to infer the erosion processes as a tracer of soil surface. The maximum beryllium-7 concentration in the analyzed period was about 40 Bq.kg-1.

Soil erosion determination in a watershed from northern Paraná (Brazil) using 137Cs BABT
Andrello,Avacir Casanova; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima.
The objective of this work was study the soil losses or gains in a watershed in the municipal district of Cambé, Paraná using 137Cs as marker for the determination of soil redistributions. A transect sampling was used to evaluate the influence of different tillage on soil erosion. One point, located in a forest area was sampled and analyzed to determine the reference inventory of cesium-137 deposited by fallout. The average value of the reference inventory was 292 Bq m-2. The cesium-137 inventory of the transect samples varied from 80 Bq m-2 to 403 Bq m-2. The sampling points in pasture presented soil losses. The sampling points in coffee plantation did not present losses or gains. The sampling points in soybean cultivated areas presented soil losses.

Scheibel,Viviane; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto.
The mate tea (Ilex paraguariensis - St. Hil.) is a beverage broadly cultivated and consumed in Brazil. The radioactive traces present in three trademarks of toasted mate tea produced at the south of Brazil were analyzed. Measurements were carried out by gamma-ray spectrometry. The average value for the 40K activity measured for marks A, B and C was 1216 ± 8, 1047 ± 14 and 666 ± 13 Bq.kg-1, respectively. The 137Cs activity was lower than the limit of detection.

Use of cesium-137 methodology in the evaluation of superficial erosive processes BABT
Andrello,Avacir Casanova; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto; Nascimento Filho,Virgílio Franco do.
Superficial erosion is one of the main soil degradation agents and erosion rates estimations for different edaphicclimate conditions for the conventional models, as USLE and RUSLE, are expensive and time-consuming. The use of cesium-137 antrophogenic radionuclide is a new methodology that has been much studied and its application in the erosion soil evaluation has grown in countries as USA, UK, Australia and others. A brief narration of this methodology is being presented, as the development of the equations utilized for the erosion rates quantification through the cesium-137 measurements. Two watersheds studied in Brazil have shown that the cesium-137 methodology was practicable and coherent with the survey in field for applications in erosion studies.
